Why do I need to submit a Self Assessment?

Self Assessment is how you tell HMRC about income that isn’t already taxed at source (like through PAYE). You’ll need to file one if you’re self-employed, run a side hustle, are a landlord, earn over £1,000 from online selling, have dividends, or get income from overseas.

It’s also needed if you’ve got other income like pensions, capital gains, or if you earn over £100k through PAYE and need to adjust for things like child benefit.

Not sure if it applies to you? Drop us a message and we’ll help you figure it out (without the jargon).

How long does a tax return take with My TaxWright?

Once you’ve filled in our onboarding form and uploaded your documents into our secure online portal, we aim to have your tax return ready for you to review and sign off within 7 working days.

The only thing that can slow us down a little? If we need to be authorised as your agent via HMRC’s Government Gateway. (It’s a simple process, but occasionally there’s a short wait while HMRC confirms access. We’ll guide you through it and keep everything moving in the meantime.)

Need it done faster? Just let us know – we’ll always do our best to work our magic.

What if I’ve missed the deadline?

We can still help you get your return submitted as quickly as possible and advise on any late filing penalties.

Do you check for tax savings?

Yes. Part of our process includes looking for allowances and reliefs you might be entitled to.

Will I be insured for any Tax Investigations?

Yes! If you’re a client with us and HMRC launches an investigation after you’ve come on board, you’ll be covered. We’ve got your back (and the paperwork).

What if I need some advice?

We’re not just here for forms. If you need a bit of extra support or want to pick our brains, you can book a 1 hr personalised tax advice session for £125. Whether it’s tax queries, business decisions, or those “am I doing this right?” moments, we’re here to help, no jargon, no judgment.

And if you’re already a client, you can still reach out anytime for day-to-day questions.

What documents will I need to provide?

Don’t worry – we’ll send you an easy-to-follow checklist to keep it simple. But generally, you’ll need things like your income records (bank statements, invoices, payslips, rental income, dividends), details of your expenses, and anything else related to your earnings for the tax year.

We’ll also need some ID and proof of address to verify it’s really you. All part of keeping things secure and compliant.

What if I’m currently with another accountant?

No problem, and no awkward break-up required. We’ll handle the handover by sending a Professional Clearance letter to your current accountant (as part of the IFA Institute’s standard process). Once you have informed them of course. Keeping things smooth and professional from start to finish.

What do you do with my documents after?

We keep everything secure and GDPR compliant. Once your return is filed, we’ll hold onto your documents safely as required by law, and we never share anything without your permission. Please see our data policy here.

Do I really need an accountant for my Self Assessment?

You can do it yourself, but if you’d rather avoid the hassle and make sure it’s done right (and on time), we’ve got you. We handle the numbers, so you can focus on the stuff you actually enjoy.

Do I really need to file if my company isn’t trading?

Yes – HMRC and Companies House still require filings to confirm your dormant status.

Can you switch my company from dormant to active later?

Yes – we can handle that for you if you start trading again.
